Correct examination of diarrhea in children

Infant diarrhea is a common disease in pediatrics. Completing relevant examinations is the prerequisite and necessary stage for diagnosing infant diarrhea. Parents should understand the examination items for infant diarrhea before treatment, so as to correctly diagnose their condition and provide reference for treatment. So what examinations are needed for infant diarrhea?

1. Stool examination: bleeding, pus cells, protozoa, worm eggs, fat droplets, etc.

2. Small intestinal absorption function test: shows intestinal malabsorption.

3. X-ray and endoscopy: detect the location of lesions, motor function status, gallstones, etc.

4. Ultrasound. Some mesenteric lymph nodes may have echoes. This is caused by inflammation.

5. Small intestinal mucosal biopsy: If conditions permit, stool culture, electron microscopy or virus isolation should be performed.

6. Others: For severe cases or those difficult to judge, serum sodium, potassium, chloride and blood gas analysis should be measured, or carbon dioxide binding capacity should be measured. Serum can be measured when convulsions occur; note that water and electrolyte disorders must be analyzed based on medical history and clinical manifestations. Electrocardiogram examination helps to understand blood potassium status: when potassium is low, the T wave is flat, then inverted, the ST segment is lowered, and U waves often appear, sometimes fused with T waves. Ventricular premature beats and ventricular tachycardia may occur in severe hypokalemia, and ventricular fibrillation may occur in some severe cases.
